EGE Langkawi

Buy thoughtfully. Travel prepared.

Taking liquor
out of Langkawi.

A good bottle. A clear plan for the journey home. Your guide to Customs allowances, flights, ferries and cruises.

Langkawi → Malaysian mainland

1 litrecombined, per eligible traveller.

For the Langkawi duty-free traveller exemption, plan around at least 48 hours on the island. Wine, spirits and beer share the same total allowance. Flying or taking the ferry does not give you a separate allowance for each type.

Going overseas? Your destination’s import rules apply. Your airline or ship must also accept the bottles.

Customs and transport sources ↓

01 / The Customs allowance

One total. Count every bottle.

The Customs Duties (Exemption) Order 2017, item 11, provides a combined 1-litre liquor allowance for travellers entering Malaysia from Langkawi, conditional on satisfying Customs that the visit lasted at least 48 hours. The current Royal Malaysian Customs traveller’s guide also lists 1 litre in total for wine, spirits, beer or malt liquor for both air and other transport. See the exemption reference.

These examples are for one eligible traveller returning to the Malaysian mainland after meeting the stay condition, carrying the purchase personally. They compare volume only; packing and other entry conditions still apply.

Within 1 litre

One 700 ml whisky

700 ml = 0.7 litre. A single 700 ml bottle fits the volume allowance.

Within 1 litre

Two 500 ml bottles

500 + 500 = 1,000 ml. The combined volume is exactly 1 litre.

Over the allowance

Two 700 ml bottles

700 + 700 = 1,400 ml. This is 400 ml above the allowance. Ask Customs about declaration and charges before buying.

Wine + beer count together

750 ml wine + 330 ml beer

That is 1,080 ml, or 80 ml above 1 litre. The limit is not 1 litre of each drink.

The 48-hour rule: count hours, not hotel nights

Example: arrive Friday at 3 pm and depart Sunday at 2 pm: that is 47 hours. Departing Sunday at 3 pm reaches 48 hours. Keep arrival and departure tickets or boarding passes so you can show the length of your stay. Allow a margin if your travel plans can change.

A day trip or an overnight stay does not automatically qualify. If your stay is shorter, or your quantity is higher, speak to Customs before purchasing. Item 11 provides for customs duty on excess liquor at the prevailing rate; do not assume a single flat tax covers every bottle or that paying duty overrides other restrictions.

02 / Leaving by air

Customs first. Baggage rules too.

For a Langkawi–Kuala Lumpur or Langkawi–Penang flight, use the mainland allowance above, then check your operating airline’s packing rules. For an international flight, check the arrival country and every transit security checkpoint. A through-ticket does not make liquid screening rules identical at every airport.

What does the airline’s “5 litres” mean?

The IATA passenger dangerous-goods table (2026, PDF) permits drinks above 24% and up to 70% alcohol by volume in retail packaging, with containers no larger than 5 litres and a combined maximum of 5 litres per person. Drinks at 24% ABV or below are outside that particular dangerous-goods restriction. Alcohol above 70% is outside this passenger exception: do not pack it as ordinary passenger baggage.

This is a transport safety limit, not a duty-free allowance. The airline can impose stricter conditions. A 40% whisky may fit the safety rules while exceeding your destination’s Customs allowance.

Can an EGE bottle go in hand luggage?

For international cabin screening, plan around containers of 100 ml or less, all fitting in one clear resealable bag of up to 1 litre. The container’s capacity counts, even when partly empty. See the airline guidance on liquids and Malaysia departures.

EGE is a town shop. A sealed 700 ml bottle bought here is not automatically an airside duty-free purchase eligible for a security exception. For a full-size bottle, arrange checked baggage if your airline accepts it, and confirm packing requirements before buying. For a domestic-only journey, ask your airline and airport specifically about that route; do not assume an international exemption applies.

Flying to Singapore? Budget for duty and GST.

Singapore Customs excludes travellers arriving from Malaysia from its liquor duty-free concession. A 700 ml bottle bought duty-free in Langkawi therefore does not become duty-free on arrival in Singapore. Declare it and pay the applicable duty and GST using Singapore Customs’ procedures. Check your full itinerary if arriving by cruise or connecting flight.

03 / Leaving by sea

Taking the ferry or driving onto a RORO.

For travel to the Malaysian mainland, the 1-litre combined allowance and qualifying Langkawi stay remain relevant. A car boot does not create an extra allowance. Wantas RORO’s own FAQ states 1 litre per visitor after a minimum 48-hour stay.

Example: one 750 ml wine fits the 1-litre quantity allowance after a qualifying stay. A six-pack of 330 ml beer is 1,980 ml, so it exceeds that allowance even though it is only one pack.

Keep receipts and travel documents accessible for inspection. Check your actual ferry’s luggage, bottle-packing and check-in requirements; passenger ferries and vehicle ferries can have different procedures.

International ferry, including Koh Lipe

Crossing to Thailand is an international arrival, not a Malaysian mainland transfer. Thai Customs passenger guidance lists no more than 1 litre of alcohol in the duty-exempt allowance and warns of consequences for excess quantities. Confirm the requirements for your sea entry point and your ferry before buying; do not assume excess alcohol can simply be admitted by paying a fee.

04 / Visiting on a cruise

A bottle for home, subject to your ship’s policy.

Ask the cruise line what happens to alcohol bought during a Langkawi port call. Reboarding after a shore visit and boarding on the first day of a cruise are different situations. Do not apply the mainland’s 48-hour exemption automatically to an overseas cruise itinerary.

For example, Royal Caribbean Group’s published conduct policy says port-of-call alcohol purchases must be presented to security when reboarding. The ship secures them and returns them shortly before the cruise ends. Its embarkation-day exception is one sealed 750 ml wine or champagne bottle per guest of drinking age; that is not a general permission to board with spirits.

Policies differ between cruise lines, ships and sailings. If your cruise ends in Singapore after visiting Malaysia, check Singapore Customs’ Malaysia-arrival rule with your exact itinerary. If you fly home afterwards, your airline and transit liquid restrictions apply again.

05 / Your shopping plan

Five checks before choosing your bottle.

  1. Name the route. Mainland Malaysia or overseas? Include connecting airports and your cruise’s final port.
  2. Check eligibility and time. EGE serves non-Muslims aged 21+. For the Langkawi mainland exemption, check your actual stay and keep proof.
  3. Add up the millilitres. Include wine, spirits and beer bought at other shops too. Read the bottle’s ABV.
  4. Confirm transport. Ask the operating airline, ferry or cruise line about the exact bottle size, strength and packing. Arrange baggage before purchase.
  5. Keep documents ready. Bring ID, travel tickets and itemised purchase receipts. Declare dutiable goods to Customs; use the red channel where provided if you have goods to declare or are unsure.

Malaysian Customs explains traveller declarations and red/green channels. Ask Customs to assess any charges; this guide does not calculate tax. The Customs traveller’s guide lists +60 3-8882 2100 / 2300 and ccc@customs.gov.my for enquiries.

06 / Common questions

The details travellers ask.

Is the Langkawi allowance per bottle or per person?

The mainland traveller allowance is 1 litre in total per eligible traveller, subject to the exemption conditions. Check actual volume: one bottle can be 700 ml, 750 ml, 1 litre or larger.

Can I take 1 litre of whisky and 1 litre of wine?

That is 2 litres combined, so it exceeds the 1-litre mainland exemption. Wine, spirits and beer are counted together. Ask Customs about your declaration and charges before buying excess quantities.

Does two nights in Langkawi always mean 48 hours?

No. Friday afternoon to Sunday morning is less than 48 hours. Compare your actual arrival and departure times, rather than the number of hotel nights.

Does a 5-litre airline limit mean 5 litres are duty-free?

No. The airline’s dangerous-goods limit and the destination’s Customs exemption serve different purposes. You must meet both sets of conditions, as well as baggage and security rules.

Does free airport delivery mean I can carry a bottle into the cabin?

No. Airport delivery arrangements do not override liquid screening or airline rules. Confirm the handover point and checked-baggage plan with EGE and your airline before purchase.

Can I use a child’s allowance or combine everyone’s bottles?

Do not use a child’s allowance for alcohol or assume another person’s allowance transfers to you. EGE’s sales are restricted to non-Muslims aged 21+. Each eligible traveller should check their own allowance and present their purchases as Customs requires.

Will EGE guarantee that Customs or my carrier accepts my purchase?

We can confirm the products and bottle sizes we have. Customs, airport security and your carrier make their own decisions under the rules for your journey. Use this guide to plan, then check unusual routes or quantities directly with them before buying.
